Race
What you are does not define you, but it certainly affects your journey in becoming who you wish to be. Race is a colloquial term used to refer to your species. In Home Defiant, you can be one of the many fantastical races that can be typically found in fantasy in addition to some monstrous races that are usually reserved for monsters. After choosing your Race at Creating a Character, you cannot change you Race barring some special circumstances. Races in Home Defiant is divided into 2 groups: Humanoid and Monstrous Races.
Humanoid Races. Humanoid races include races like Humans, Elves and Dwarves. If you select a humanoid race, you will need to select a subrace as well. The humanoid race progression is linear and your choice of subrace will determine the variation in Appearance, Trait and Skill you will have access to. However, you can continuously Level Up into a Humanoid Race without limit.Monstrous Races. Monstrous races includes races like Undead, Dragons and Slimes. If you select a monstrous race, your progression is limited up to a certain amount. However, when you reach the maximum level of your current Race, you will be able to Evolve into stronger version of your Race and access to new progression options.
Racial Trait
When you choose a Race, you will also gain a Racial Trait which are defining characteristics of your Race. You can only have one Racial Trait at a time. Whenever you gain a new Racial Trait, you must choose to keep either the new or the old Racial Trait. Racial traits will usually contain information such as:
Appearance. How your species generally look like.Size. How many spaces your creature control.Lifespan. How old can your character be with an optional rule for the Fates to determine Old age.Biology. Any unique racial characteristics compared to a standard human.Trait Skills. Skills you gain while having this Racial Trait.Favored Attribute. Whenever you Level Up in this Race, you can increase one of the Favored Attribute.Evolution Path. You can perform Evolution as described in the next section.
Evolution
In civilisations, people prioritize working together and development of skills to ensure the survival of the whole group. In the wilds, it is often survival of the fittest. Many races in the wilds had to fight to survive and adapt to changing situations. Some even change their forms to adapt to dangerous situations or to attain more power. This process is called Evolution.
In a Racial Trait, it will sometimes describe an Evolution Path that a creature can take when it reaches the maximum level for the Race. The next time they Level Up, they can choose to invest a level into one of the Races described in the Evolution Path. At the same time, they may choose to adopt the new Racial Trait provided in the new Race.
