Creeping Fate
Fate is a story written in the beginning of time. They are supposed to be immutable, unchangable until the end of time. Supposed to be. Sometimes, there are individuals who break their predestined end and choose to fight back. These Defiants use their sheer will to break out of the columns written for them and change The Fates' design. One or two erroneous action is within expectation. Three or four is pushing it. But at certain point, when you stretch the weave of Fate's tapestry too much, it will BREAK!
The Creeping Fate is a dramatisation tool for the Fates to use during the game. Over the course of the game, The Fates will gain
Gaining Fate Points
Fate Points represents how far the Defiants are going against their fate. Fate Points are gained whenever any of the following happens:
- Whenever a Defiant performs the Defy Fate actions as describe under Potential.
- Whenever a Defiant succeeds on a check with at least Defiance 2.
- Whenever an NPC fails a check against the Defiants with at least Defiance -2.
Spending Fate Points
Fate Points are the fate's way to nudge the course of the tale being written to go back on its predestined tracks. At any time, you can spend 1 Fate Point to perform one of the following actions:
- If a creature fails a Check against the Defiant, turn it into a success instead.
- At the end of a Defiant's turn, another creature of your choice takes its turn immediately.
- When Defiant wounds a creature, it loses half of its current Wear (rounded down).
- When a creature spends Potential, it is able to use the ability without spending Potential.
Whenever the Fates spend a Fate Point, they should describe how it happens. Perhaps in a moment of desperation, the creature recalls a old memory, reaffirms an staunch belief or an external magical energy surrounds them. This allowed it go beyond its natural limits, assisted by fate, to perform the action.
A Tool Not a Rule
Remember that the Creeping Fate system is only a tool and not a hard rule for the Fates. When they have a lot of Fate Points, it means that the Defiants has been doing well in the game and it is time to inject more opposition IF the situation calls for it. The Fates do not need to spend Fate Points just because they have a lot of it. If the moment calls for some levity, let the Defiants succeed continuously and leave the Fate Points unused. The Fate Points can be saved for turn of luck later in the game.
